Headaches – Causes to Consider

Headaches afflict everyone and for some on a regular basis, they range in severity and location with a plethora of causative factors:
Illness, stress, fatigue, sinus issues, hormonal changes, PTST, dehydration, intensive exercise and environmental factors such as chemical cleaning products are all possible reasons. The factors I wish to address are stress and posture which can readily cause muscular tension.
As we all know, modern living means we spend more time sitting at computers, for many, multiple hours daily, then add to that time spent driving and sitting in sofas, none of which orient our spine and shoulders in a healthy natural position. There are several muscles which pull directly from the spine, shoulder blades and collar bone region, directly into the neck and skull. These pulling forces are continuous moving upwards to the scalp so you can sense that if one or multiple muscle groups are tight, we can encounter the possibility of tension headaches. Factor in eye strain from screen glare and symptoms increase.

It is somewhat ironic that here I am typing away to deliver this article!

What You Can Do:
• Think about how you sit: Sit bones/pelvis level, an upright spine, head up not forward, shoulders over the pelvis, feet on the floor then adjust screen level to accommodate
• Take shorts breaks to move your arms, open the chest and oscillate the spine. We are designed to move and will become increasingly rigid if we don’t. Little and often!
• Break the mold, try something new! Gentle yoga, tai chi or dance when done with awareness will help free up your body. Take progressive steps, build up gradually and think about seeking advice to be safe and for motivation.
