The Neuroscience of Mindfulness
The Neuroscience of Mindfulness
Currently reading a book by Stan Rooski, 'The Neuroscience of Mindfulness'. Amongst other things it is exploring the link between chronic or prolonged stress and immunity. As you may know, cortisol, one of the hormones produced during the stress response suppresses our immune response to the extent that we are 70% more likely to be infected in the presence of a virus or bacteria.
Another effect of the prolonged presence of cortisol was that white cells had failed to recognise and destroy 'rogue' cells with clear implications around cancer.
Obviously, there are multiple factors which influence our propensity towards infections and tumours, yet the broader effects of stress are clearly detrimental.
Looking after our physical health is so clearly connected with our mind and mental health.
Massage, yoga and mindfulness are valuable methods and tools in managing stress.
Take care folks. Will Lane
